Small step towards peace

CAFOD partner Caritas Colombia has welcomed moves by President Uribe of Colombia to release 150 FARC guerrillas as a step towards peace

Although there is nothing yet to suggest the FARC guerrilla organisation will release any hostages in exchange, Caritas Colombia says there is hope among the Colombian people that FARC will recognise this as a peace initiative.
The FARC is the oldest and largest group among Colombia's left-wing guerrillas - and one of the world's richest and most powerful guerrilla armies.
For 50 years they have been fighting the Colombian state. Millions of innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes caught in the crossfire.
